ConTrust Research seminar „India as Method: Challenges and Perspectives in the Study of Media and Politics in Contemporary South Asia“

This program includes two essay films Memories of a Milk City (1991) and Tales of Planet Kolkata (1993) by Ruchir Joshi, an Indian filmmaker, cultural writer, and novelist based in Kolkata.Shot on 16 mm, both films reimagine the form of the essay film to propose new ways of looking at the multitudes of Indian lifeonscreen. The filmmaker will talk about his film practice followed by a Q and A with the audience.

Ruchir Joshi is a film-maker, columnist and writer based in Calcutta. His films include Egaro Mile /Eleven Miles and Tales from Planet Kolkata. He is the author of a novel, The Last Jet-Engine Laugh (Harper Collins UK and India). He is an opinion writer for leading newspapers and magazines in India, as well as a contributor of several essays and photo-text pieces to magazines, including Granta
